During December 2022, my art installation, Umbilical Cords, is on display in the sanctuary, St. Giles Church, Ottawa. The images show details of the “stained glass” elements and part of the installation that shows the original works in situ.

UMBILICAL CORDS

An Advent Art Installation

Umbilical Cords is an art installation in two parts: the art on the walls and the art on the windows.

The installation expresses in art the bonds that tie Laura to her mother and to her eldest son: the umbilical cords that stretch across generations.

The art on the walls is made from watercolours Laura completed at what was then Toronto’s Ontario College of Art when pregnant with her first child. These 45-year-old works are bound with her late mother’s yarn, which Laura found after her mother died.

The art in the windows is based on digital photographs of these artworks that Laura reworked on her computer to intensify colour and contrast. These images were then printed on mylar, cropped, and arranged on the windows.

Laura Brandon is a member of St Giles. She has been making art all her life and has occasionally taken courses.
